Portage Path Wildlife Area

LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION
This 89-acre wildlife area lies two-tenths of a mile south of the city of Akron in the Portage Lakes in Summit County. This area is primarily marshland and access is by water only from Long Lake Reservoir in the Portage Lakes. Boat access to Long Lake is off State Route 93 on Cove Road.

HISTORY AND PURPOSE
Since the area was established in 2007 it has been managed as a public hunting area for wetland game wildlife. Hunting, trapping, and wildlife viewing are the primary recreational uses.

FISH AND WILDLIFE
This area offers a wide variety of wetland wildlife species. A variety of waterfowl frequent the marshland as well as the adjacent reservoir. Mallards, wood ducks, and Canada geese are common while numbers of diving duck species including scaup, ring-necked, buffleheads, and canvasbacks may be seen on the adjacent open waters of the lake during late fall and winter. Furbearers, including mink, muskrat, raccoon, and beaver may be commonly encountered in this area.

HUNTING AND TRAPPING
Waterfowl hunting and furbearer trapping are open to the public throughout this area; however, a permit is required to trap beaver or river otter on this or any division-owned or managed land. Contact the division for information on beaver and otter trapping.

PUBLIC USE FACILITIES
This area has limited public access. A conservation easement (no access) and private property surround the west, north, and east sides of the area. Access to this area is from the south only by boat from Long Lake Reservoir. There is a nearby boat access for Long Lake located off State Route 93 on Cove Road.
