LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION
The 74-acre Conant Wildlife Area lies in northeast Ohio, southeastern Ashtabula County, and Hartsgrove Township. Located on Windsor-Mechanicsville Road, U.S. Route 6 is less than one mile to the north, State Route 534 is two miles to the west, and State Route 45 is 2.5 miles to the east. The area has very little topography and, with the exception of two small creeks, is poorly drained. Eighty-five percent of the area is second growth forest with dominant species of ash, maple, red oak, and pin oak. Index of Ohio's trees from the Division of Forestry. Two small tributaries to the Grand River flow through the area producing several acres of natural and beaver marshes. The area also shares its eastern and northeastern boundaries with the Rome State Nature Preserve.
HISTORY AND PURPOSE The Conant Wildlife Area was purchased in 2006 to be used as a public hunting area. The area is now managed for public hunting.
WILDLIFE There are many game animals found on the area including fox squirrel, wild turkey, white-tailed deer, and cottontail rabbits. Furbearers such as mink, skunk, opossum, and muskrat are also present. Many species of nesting and migrating birds also use this area at different times of the year. The few wetland areas are also used by beaver, river otter, and migrating waterfowl with wood ducks being the dominant species. The area is within the Snowshoe Hare Reintroduction Zone. Refer to the Ohio Hunting and Trapping Regulations publication for additional cottontail rabbit hunting restrictions.
HUNTING, FISHING, AND TRAPPING Conant Wildlife Area provides good hunting opportunities for white-tailed deer, wild turkey, squirrel, and some waterfowl. There is limited trapping for raccoon, mink, and muskrat. There are no opportunities for fishing available. Beaver and otter can be trapped by permit only.
