The Utica Shale is a stratigraphical unit of Middle Ordovician age in the Appalachian Basin. The Utica Shale takes it's name from the city of Utica NY. The rock layer of the Utica Shale extends from Quebec to Kentucky with large concentrations in West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
