The Ohio Utica Shale is a stratigraphical unit of Middle Ordovician age in the Appalachian Basin. The Ohio Utica Shale takes it's name from the city of Utica NY. The rock layer of the Utica Shale extends from Quebec to Kentucky with large concentrations in West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania. In recent years the Ohio Utica Shale has become an important part in the future of American energy independence. The Ohio Utica Shale is conservatively estimated to contain 15 Trillion cubic feet of Natural. This has cause many geologists to claim that the Ohio Utica Shale may contain a large amount more Natural Gas than then Marcellus Shale, a formation that lies above the Ohio Utica Shale.
